Thank God this year is over though. It's been the most hellish, agonising year I've ever had in my Wolves-supporting life. I'm just glad I didn't live through the 80s cos this year has been so bad, I think that era would've finished me off! But with 2013 around the corner, things can hopefully only get better for those of us in Old Gold. But the alternative... well it's not something I even want to consider right now. It certainly is a rollercoaster though.
My Wolves MOTM: Roger Johnson. One of the biggest disappointments of the McCarthy era, the former skipper put in a determined performance against his old boss as he demonstrated a one-man mission to organise the defence and try to keep Ipswich at bay.
Wolves In A Word: Pathetic.

Substitution of Doyle;
ReplyDeleteGoing down the RHS of pitch first half we were dire - winning nothing.
Doyle kept going down and the ref was having none of it.
Sigurdarson = Height and pace
Ebanks-Blake = Pace and Strength
Doyle = Trickery and work ethic
Taking off Doyle and replacing him with an actual RM was the logical thing to do (Seeing as though nothing was given for him, Penalty etc etc)
I am with SS on that substitution.
I can see your point on that, I just found it odd as we were chasing a goal and to take off a striker for a largely ineffective winger (then sticking him on the left-wing instead) was a strange one for me
Deleteyeah I noticed how he went on the left wing and thought that was odd - I also noticed that in the first half, all 3 of our strikers rotated between going right winger, and we had our best spell when it was Doyle on the wing with EB + Siggy up front - maybe that had a factor in it.
DeleteI think most of the criticism aimed towards Pennant is severely undeserved, and think most of it is borne out of frustration that he, and the team haven't lived up to expectations.
The same expectations that are too high (When we got promoted we were hardly convincing defensively, and it's still the same backbone to the team!) and this adds more pressure onto the players.
By the way, excellent article.
Yeahh - I guess maybe Stale thought having them cut inside would give them better shooting chances? Idk, was very weird. But I agree, that was our best spell of the first half. I've said to my best mate for ages that Doyle should be played on the right - he spends most of his time out there anyway haha!
DeleteI agree, there's so much expected of him and he hasn't lived up to it. Mind you I don't think he's seemed that bothered about playing for us either which hasn't helped his cause.
Agree there's too much pressure and expectation around the place. We need a season like Mick's first in charge, where we were relaxed and just went with the flow!
Thanks! Really appreciate that :)
I think it may seem that he isn't bothered, but I put that down to the fact that Stale doesn't like traditional wingers bombing at the fullbacks, he likes his wingers 'tucked in' which could have something to do with it.
DeleteI prefer doyler up front on his own in a 4-5-1 personally, his graft seems more effective then.
Micks first season we had no expectations, but then his next season he nearly got sacked!
Next season, with no expectations and pressure on the players it'll be much nicer and more fun to watch, because at the minute it seems like it's too much effort, it doesn't seem like football, if that makes any sense.
(Put it in the wrong spot and deleted it - apologies :) )
You've hit the nail on the head there! It doesn't seem like Solbakken like wingers taking people on and beating them for fun - which we know Pennant can do. So yeah, I think that's been a problem for him. I would rather play Siggy up top in a 4-5-1, he's got the graft, skill and pace to trouble defenders
DeleteI agree totally, as long as Stale lasts this season, I think next season will be much better and much more enjoyable! And especially better in the stands without the moaners and groaners around too!
Haha no worries! :)
Personally I'd like Sako and Siggy playing just behind doyle in a 4-3-2-1 formation, as they'd be fed by Doyle doing the work up front.
DeleteWith the central midfield quality which we have, the 3 would have creative freedom.
Davis / O'hara / Henry / Doumbia, it's frightening how strong we are in that department!
That sounds frightening too! That could really do damage, I must say! And a midfield 3 of Doumbia, Henry (sitting deeper) and O'Hara would be so balanced and would push teams back!
DeleteNow we just gotta find a way to strengthen the defence ;)
Exactly
DeleteDoumbia and O'hara feeding the front 3, with Henry anchoring the midfield role by playing more defensively (Xavi-esque)
I prefer Stears to Foley at RB, just because he can head the flipping ball.
Doherty coming back should be good as he is attacking and would provide foley with competition.
Signing Scott Dann would show we mean business, as him and RJ would be the dream team getting back together ;)
Ward gets too much stick but he needs competition at LB, some quality in that position wouldn't go amiss.
Exactly - though the Xavi bit is a little optimistic ;) haha but I'll allow it lol.
DeleteI am warming to Stears at RB compared to Foley, who just hasn't looked the same this season! But yeah, I fancy giving Doherty a try. And I think, on the subject of youngsters, Batth and Cassidy need a game imo.
Scott Dann would be a brilliant signing... but I can't see us getting him sadly. You never know though! Will be interesting to see what Kevin Thelwell has in mind for Stale this January!
In some ways I'd rather have Elokobi (if he's ever fit) at LB but even then, he doesn't fill me with confidence
Imo the only thing that ward had over elokobi was that ward went forward - something he doesn't seem to be doing as much under the new style of play.
DeleteBatth needs to play - I can see a January of Batth instead of Berra to force him into a new contract (God forgive).
Griffiths has no work/training ethic, he doesn't fit in with our squad - and it's one thing banging them in in scotland, but not England.
Cassidy is a big tall lad who looks exciting, so he should get some game time - in preference to Nouble atm (Nouble is out of his depth and should be sent out on loan IMO but having seen the squad train he looks good for morale as he's a funny guy)
Yeahh that's true! But I think he doesn't want to because, unlike with Jarvis, Sako never tracks back and help him out/cover him.
DeleteBatth has to play soon - like I said, if he doesn't it could cost us big, big time in the future.
I know everyone raves about Griffiths scoring, but he's lazy and doesn't care or want to work hard here. So I don't want to keep him playing here. Cassidy looks more of a threat than Nouble, who tbh, I don't know why we signed. He was a Connor/Moxey signing and it's shown. But yeah he is great for morale - him and David Davis seem quite the duo from what I've seen on Twitter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZXoa7IbOUI&feature=player_embedded This is why he isn't in the team ;)
DeleteJust before the first goal today, when ward cleared it and it went straight to their attacker, sako should've been there, instead he was marking their RB, in the ipswich half -_-
Hahaha that's a quality video - fair play to Foley lmao :P but yeahh, Nouble wasn't the best :P
DeleteYeahh - he does that, or if he loses the ball he'll dawdle back to cover. He's a luxury player, but one we perhaps can't afford atm!
He's not on that long a contract either - which worries me greatly!
DeleteNouble > Noel Hunt though, Noel Hunt was absolutely tragic haha
Who isn't? Sako? =/
DeleteReally, was he that bad? Oh dear :')

ReplyDeleteSako is on a 3 year contract, I believe
ReplyDeleteNoel Hunt did it in 32 attempts haha
Ahh that's not too bad really - about average for an unknown player
DeleteHahaha oh that's shocking!! :')
